Welcome to The MLL Specialist! I teach middle school Multilingual Learners and create ready-to-use materials for newcomer ESL students in grades 6-8. Each product supports one home language (Chinese, Spanish or Haitian Creole, with more coming), and L1 support steps down as ELP levels rise. Lessons align to WIDA and NJ ELA standards. You'll find lessons, picture dictionaries, bell ringers, cue cards and free resources, all original and print-ready.
Week 4 of the Newcomer Survival Kit moves newcomers from naming things to describing them. After identity (Week 1), school places (Week 2) and routines (Week 3), students learn the Size + Color + Noun formula, weather and clothing, cafeteria food and prices, the Rule of S, comparatives (-er / -est), irregular plurals ("Rule Breakers") and simple science words for a Scientist's Report. Built for ESL/MLL teachers with L1 Spanish students below WIDA ELP 2.0. Instructions are in English, with Spanish glosses and cognate markers on the vocabulary sheets and "Spanish tip" boxes for adjective order, plurals and comparatives. A 5-day lesson in 60-minute blocks. The Teacher Guide shows how to teach it in 4 days. Partner activities: Describe & Find cut-cards, the Classroom Cafeteria, Rule Breakers Memory cut-cards, and the Messy Room scene. All art is original. There are no photos, and students never share personal information. These bell ringers give Haitian Creole-speaking newcomers a 5-minute start to every class. They use the same themes as the ELP 1.0-1.9 Picture Dictionary and the same kind of frames as the Sentence Building & Speaking Pack. What students practice: • Picture Words: match 4 pictures to a word bank (English and Haitian Creole) and write the English word • Trace & Write: trace and copy a model sentence • Count It: count, write the number and number word, and say "I see ___." • Build the Sentence: put word tiles in order with a capital letter and end mark • Talk & Check: ask a partner one question, write the answer, and check an "I can" goal Teacher note: every day of the week has the same task type, so students learn the routine and start on their own. Cut each page in half or project one card. L1 support: directions in English with a short Haitian Creole line, word banks with Haitian Creole, and Teacher Guide notes for Haitian Creole speakers. Designed for ESL teachers to implement with L1 Haitian Creole-speaking students whose English level is below a WIDA ACCESS or Screener score of 2.0. Differentiation: the Teacher Guide shows what to address at each ELP level (1.0-1.3, 1.4-1.6, 1.7-1.9; not official WIDA categories) in Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing, with tips for struggling and advanced learners. Use alongside any Newcomer lesson or on its own: 5 minutes at the start of class, 40 days (8 weeks). What's Included (34 pages): • Cover, Terms of Use, Contents (3) • Teacher Guide: routine, weekly themes, ELP-level guidance by domain, L1 notes, standards (3) • My Bell Ringer Log, student tracker (1) • 40 bell ringers in 8 themed weeks, two per page, plus a word review card each week (24) • Answer Keys (2) • Credits (1) Themes: School & Classroom; People & Family; Numbers & Time; Daily Routines; Feelings & Needs; Food & Drink; Places at School; Clothes & Weather.
