Wired to Respond | Psychology Unit Gr 10-12 | EN/ES/HT | SpEd

Wired to Respond - a Psychology unit on biology and behavior - the brain, neurons and the nervous system - built on sourced documents: NINDS Brain Basics pages, a peer-reviewed paper on the action potential, a build-a-model neuron lab, a placard case file on Phineas Gage, EEG and fMRI, a fishbowl seminar at the case desk, and a cold document (the 2012 Gage connectivity study) on test day, Special Education and English Learner edition. Six class periods (five teaching days and a test day). Fully trilingual: English, Latin American Spanish and Haitian Creole as three separate single-language files - never a translation table. Day 1 - Cells That Carry Messages Day 2 - Signals Jump the Gap Day 3 - Experts in One Brain Day 4 - Case File: Gage, EEG and fMRI Day 5 - The Circle: The Case Desk Day 6 - A Document You Have Not Read (unit test) Every day: a Do Now, an "I can ... by ..." learning target, a partner discussion, and an Exit Ticket. Days 1-3 each read a sourced document with the SOURCE IT routine (who wrote it, when, for whom, and why); Day 2 is a build-a-model neuron lab, Day 4 the placard case file, Day 5 the fishbowl seminar, Day 6 the test. Documents are U.S. government pages (NINDS/NIH) and CC BY open-access papers, quoted with their dates and listed in the sources file; every invented number says SAMPLE DATA (invented). The brain, scan and neuron-model pictures are illustrations created for the unit (not photographs); the Cajal drawing and the Gage portrait are real historical images. Mental illness and drug treatment are not taught; nothing in the unit is medical advice. WHAT YOU DOWNLOAD (3 ZIP files, one per language; 37 files in all, including a README and a sources/rights file): - 9 student slide decks (.pptx), 3 per language (118 slides per language) - 18 student papers (.docx), one per day per language - 3 unit tests (.docx), one per language, plus 3 answer keys - 3 argument rubrics (.docx), one per language - 1 teacher guide (.docx, English) - a README and a sources/rights file (The English ZIP also holds the teacher guide, README and sources/rights file.) Unit test: 36 points (Part A 16 multiple-choice, Part B 8 on a cold document, Part C 12 in four argument boxes), with an argument rubric. Editable .pptx and .docx, built to be used online: students type into text boxes. No lined paper. Teacher supplies: Nothing. PLEASE NOTE: The Spanish and Haitian Creole files are generated translations and have not been reviewed by a fluent social studies teacher. The unit has not yet been tried with students. Single-teacher license.
