Veterans Day Reading Comprehension | Main Idea, Key Details & Text Evidence Grades 3–4

Help 3rd and 4th graders move beyond simply spotting a topic. In this focused Veterans Day reading mini-unit, students read short informational passages, identify a main idea, choose details that genuinely support it, and explain their thinking with text evidence. The lessons are designed to move from guided practice toward more independent reading and writing. Students first compare topics and main ideas, then sort relevant and irrelevant details, rank evidence, use paragraph numbers, and write a supported response. A quick check at the end makes it easier to see who can explain the main idea—not just guess it. WHAT'S INCLUDED • 15 US Letter interior pages total: 12 student reading/practice pages, 1 independent quick assessment, and 2 teacher answer-key pages. • Original, short informational passages about Veterans Day and the meaning of November 11; the history of Armistice Day; military-service branches; respectful ways to honor veterans; school and community activities; and Veterans Day versus Memorial Day. • Main idea identification, topic-versus-main-idea activities, strongest-detail selection, irrelevant-detail elimination, timeline comprehension, evidence ranking, comparison, and constructed-response practice. • Paragraph-number text evidence, a guided claim–evidence–reasoning ladder, an independent written response, and a six-point quick-assessment scoring guide. • Teacher answer keys with suggested responses for all 13 student pages. For open-ended responses, equivalent accurate answers are acceptable. SKILLS PRACTICED Determining a main idea • Identifying key supporting details • Selecting stronger textual evidence • Removing irrelevant information • Referring to paragraph numbers • Explaining how evidence supports an idea • Informational reading and written responses CLASSROOM USE Use the pages for November ELA lessons, whole-group modeling, guided reading groups, independent practice, literacy review, homework, or a simple formative check.
