Story Time: The Era of Good Feelings

Help your students step back in time and experience the Era of Good Feelings in a creative, meaningful way! In this lesson, students will learn about the people, events, and ideas of the early 1800s and then turn that knowledge into their very own storybook. This activity is a great fit for upper elementary and middle school students, and even as an enrichment activity for high school. It blends social studies with creative writing as students explore topics such as nationalism, westward expansion, the American System, and even the tensions still present beneath the surface of this “good feelings” era. Students will create their own historical storybook while practicing important writing skills like sequencing events, developing characters, describing settings, and staying historically accurate. By the end, they’ll have a finished story they can be proud of along with a deeper understanding of the time period. This lesson is perfect for: Social studies units, writing workshops, history projects, enrichment activities, early finishers, or a creative end-of-unit assessment for the Era of Good Feelings.
