Me on the Map Project & Map Skills Activities | Community Maps, Compass Rose Grades 1–3

Turn Me on the Map into an applied geography project where students do more than name where they live—they create maps, read map keys, use compass directions, follow routes, locate places, and build real beginning navigation skills. This 16-page Me on the Map Project and Map Skills resource for Grades 1–3 moves students from familiar spaces to the wider world while requiring an authentic map skill at every stage. Students progress through: My Space → My School → My Community → My Region/State/Province → My Country → My Continent → My World Instead of completing a simple sequence of personal-geography worksheets, students work like young cartographers as they create symbols, build map keys, interpret locations, use cardinal directions, trace routes, plan routes, and design maps another person can actually follow. BUILT-IN DIFFERENTIATION Two clearly marked levels make the activities easier to use with different learners. Level 1 • Guided Cartographer includes more visual support, partially completed maps, word banks, simple routes, symbol choices, and shorter responses. Level 2 • Independent Navigator asks students to create their own symbols and keys, use compass directions, build multi-step routes, explain locations, and make more independent mapping decisions. MAP SKILLS INCLUDED Students practice: • map symbols • map keys and legends • compass rose skills • north, south, east, and west • following routes • creating routes • bird's-eye maps • community maps • school maps • personal geography • location words • regional geography • country and continent location • continents and oceans • beginning mapmaking • spatial reasoning A consistent KEY • DIRECTION • ROUTE • LOCATION icon system helps children recognize the map skill they are practicing on each page. Students also use a reusable MAP CHECK checklist to ask: Did I create or use a key? Did I show direction? Can someone follow my route? Are my locations clear? LOCATION-NEUTRAL FOR MORE CLASSROOMS The resource avoids U.S.-only geography wording. Students can use state, province, or region, making the project easier to use in classrooms around the world. 16-PAGE PROJECT SEQUENCE The resource includes visual map vocabulary, personal-space mapping, school navigation, community maps, region mapping, country routes, continent and world activities, two difficulty levels, and a final integrated Cartographer Mission. The final project requires students to combine all four core skills—KEY, DIRECTION, ROUTE, and LOCATION—to create a functional map another person could actually use. PERFECT FOR Grades 1–3 geography and social studies units, map skills lessons, Me on the Map projects, geography centers, independent practice, small groups, homeschool, early finishers, review, sub plans, and beginning cartography activities. Print and go with meaningful geography practice that turns “Me on the Map” into real mapmaking and navigation.
