Maya's Rainbow Pencils Interactive Adventure: Fairness and Sharing SEL Lesson, Film and Games
An interactive, ready-to-teach 45-minute lesson about fairness and sharing for students aged 7 to 11. Students don't just watch the story, they step inside it. It runs entirely from this download: no internet connection, no accounts and no student data.
How it works
Unzip the folder and open one file in your web browser. The animated film pauses for Pause and Predict and Choose the Ending, then students colour their way up the poster to the sun with fair-sharing choices, name feelings with the Feelings Thermometer, catch fair-sharing choices in the Fair Share Catcher, build their own avatar and earn the Fair Share Champion badge.
The story
Each table in Maple Class is making a poster about the school garden. Maya brings a brand new box of thirty rainbow pencils, but when Leo and Ben ask to borrow a colour, she says no. Sami, who joined the class that week, has no pencils at all. One by one, her friends go to help another group, and Maya is left colouring alone. Ms Harper explains that equal means everyone gets the same, but fair means everyone gets what they need to join in. Maya puts her pencils in the middle, passes the blue one to Sami first, and together the friends make the brightest poster in the class.
