French Writing Reading and Spelling Program Sample FSL beginner Writers Unit 4

This French writing unit is the fourth part in a multi-week series that takes students who have never written a sentence in French before to writing full sentences in just the first 2 weeks! Using simple grammar rules, sight words, and eventually simple verbs, it's a great way to kick-start French composition in a non-intimidating and simple way. And no, it won't take up all of your time! 2-week units are meant to be used 4 days per week. How these units work: Each unit covers a basic rule of French writing. For example, the first unit teaches students that nouns are either masculine or feminine and change the articles and adjectives used to describe them. Along with this, every 2 weeks there is a new word list, giving students plenty of time to learn the new words and the new rule. A daily worksheet is given along with daily dictations and a weekly quiz. As the units and weeks progress, students will go from writing simple sentences using only sight words, adjectives and prepositions to learning about beginner-level verb conjugation. After completing all of the units, students will be ready to delve into the deeper concepts of verbs and write longer paragraphs and papers. What grades are these units for? Before beginning a unit, students must be familiar with the basics of grammar in English (what a noun is, what an article is, etc). I don't recommend starting these units before third grade. What if I don't know French well? Don't worry! I've included a link to a pronunciation website, and all lessons are written in English. It's a great unit for homeschooling or small classes alike! What Does Unit 4 Teach? In unit 4 students will learn new sight words as well as the verb être (to be) in the present tense. They will also learn about the correct use of 'au', à l'' and 'à la', and I have also included extra notes if you wish to teach the usage of 'aux' or addressing going to a country (these are optional). Spiral learning from previous weeks is also included. In this unit, kids will really start to develop sentences that go together, writing three sentences about a topic or picture prompt. What's Included in the 2-week units? A word list with explanations for teachers and/or parents/tutors A word list or flashcards for students A rule poster to display Student-sized rule cards for notebooks Sample lesson plans (8 days of lessons) Daily worksheets (8 days of worksheets) Daily French dictations to read to students Student sentence books to practice reading the sentences and words they have learned Dictation pages for students; find a word activity for students Student dictionary to keep track of new words learned
